Breakfast with the Sakuma's at Devon Cafe

What are you expecting when someone visits a particular place repeatedly? To emphasize even more, the person actually has limited time with tons of available options, yet she still decides to opt for the same place more than once. Yes, that’s exactly what happened to me with Devon Café. Having visited it once last year didn’t stop me, or perhaps it’s more suitable to call it even encourage me more to go there again for my Sydney trip this year. Not only me, my entire family love it, despite the fact that it serves brunch menu which are mostly western ones, which usually my parents put as the latter preference compared to Asian cuisines. And that's all because of Devon's signature brunch menu, Breakfast with The Sakuma's!

Formerly having 2 outlets, on Danks and on Surry Hills, Devon's guests now have to bear much longer queue at the Surry Hills outlet as it's the only one remaining, at least till mid October. Yes, that's exactly what happened since the Danks one was closed in September back then. Despite the fact that Danks outlet was closed, Devon's loyal consumers needn't be worry, since they're going to soon replace it with the brand new branch in Barangaroo. New place, new atmosphere, and new signature dish to be introduced as well; Japanese Katsu Sandwich! (Well, this was the sneak peek of the new outlet which I got).

As I've mentioned before, the time when I came to the outlet, I had to patiently wait to get a seat. Honestly admitted, the venue's indeed quite small with all seats located in indoor area. The green walls and contemporary paintings beautifully make up the venue. Nonetheless, due to the limited space, the distance between tables are quite close and the free space to walk is very narrow. Well, I highly expect the one in Barangaroo will come in bigger size.

Due to the high traffic in the restaurant, all the waiters, waitresses, and baristas were all extremely busy. Looks like they had long been the experts on what they were doing at that moment, moving very fast as if the next second will never come LOL. One key tips from me, don't walk too close to them as you might get hit without them even noticing it (my true experience!). Great thing, the service was quite speedy and the turnover was pretty quick.

Breakfast with The Sakuma's (AUD 25)

Now let's go to what's on the table, which I actually have highlighted in the beginning, the main reason why I craved for the second visit. Almost every guests’ all-time favorite menu in Devon. If you’re there dining in the café, you could see that it’s very rare a table didn’t have Sakuma in its order list. Born in Makassar, my family has high standard for seafood, particularly fish, as our hometown does serve one of the best of it. We always want it fresh, perfectly cooked with moist texture, and well-seasoned delivering rich taste once it melts in the mouth. Absolutely not a coincidence, Devon’s Sakuma’s able to impeccably match our likings. From the gorgeous pink color, you could already tell that the doneness level of the miso grilled king salmon was accurate. Accompanied by the runny poached eggs, succulent radish salad, and distinctive bread-crumbed smoked eel croquette which you might be unable to find anywhere else; this dish turned out stunning in both presentation and flavor! Not to mention, that three round dots you could see in the picture, the well-known Kewpie Mayonnaise, which would surely make the dish become incomplete if missing.

Fries with Aioli (AUD 7)

Could you guess what usually become the bestfriend of fish? Yeesss, you're absolutely right if you just said fries. Having this dynamic duo would for sure spoil your taste bud well. Making it even better, Devon's version was not just serving plain French Fries, but the faultlessly-seasoned one instead. When I said seasoned, you needn't worry that it went too salty or the flavor was over-powering since I personally disliked if those powder seasonings were too much. Besides, you had the aioli dipping sauce, whose taste could perfectly balance the fries. If you had the same thinking that the fish was quite too small just like me, you should now cheer since these fries came in super generous portion.

Hot Skimmed Cappuccino (AUD 4)

Not to forget, brunch would always be incomplete without the cup of caffeine. Opting for the simple one, I picked the hot skimmed cap. You could see a smile on my face when I found out the normal size was just like the common large one. Despite the slightly too milky taste, the gigantic size came as the compensation. And like typical Sydney's coffee, the acidity level was very low, suited my desire best.

If you happened to visit Sydney, I strongly recommended you to have Devon Cafe on your priority list, and Breakfast with The Sakuma's should be the first dish to try. Besides, you could go for their gorgeously looking pastries displayed on the showcase as well. Knowing that the owner's an Indonesian, I'm somehow really proud of our country and its people for being able to craft awesome stuffs to be enjoyed by others, not only domestically but also overseas!
