Tetsuo

The last time I’ve been to Nook, I noticed Tetsuo was also there, but mistakenly thought it’s a furniture shop. Well actually I wasn’t that wrong as they did sell furniture and home decorations, but I wasn’t completely right either as they’re not limited to a shop, but also a fusion Japanese and Vegan Restaurant at the same time. Sounds unique and exciting? If you’ve just said yes, I couldn’t agree more. Like how Japanese and Vegan could make perfect couple? That question did tickle my curiosity bit too hard.

As expected, I was enchanted by the interior and the stuffs they sold. I knew I wasn’t buying and bringing anything home, but I had always been excited going to such store and simply did window shopping; well perhaps for my future reference? It felt like going to Kimsoo, just that this came in different arrangement. Similar to Nook, dining in here made you feel like going back to the nature despite it was fully air conditioned and you’re in closed indoor area, compared to Nook where you dined below the blue sky and just covered by the simple roof.

Coming after Milu, another ‘sister’ of Nook, Tetsuo did the same thing with its ‘siblings’, serving the early-birds by opening at 8am. So you now had more options to start your day by spoiling your tummy. Way beyond that, not only serving those who’re productive in playing with their time, Tetsuo did come as the savior to those who took the big leap in life by eating right. Most dishes served were plant-based, giving more options for those who chose to go Vegan. Only limited items featured the animal-based proteins, but please don’t get worried as you would always have the option to add that ‘extra happiness’ (read: protein toppings) into your meal.

Vegan Gyoza
Something green to kickstart the early feast, simply because why not??!? I was pretty much hitched by the unique appearance of this appetizer which basically contained tofu and garlic as the stuffing of the dumplings. Taking aside the fact that it’s being too salty and you might not want to dip it into the sauce any longer, it’s overall flavorful and the taste made the carnivores might forget that the ingredient had no meat in it. The skin was moist and I loved the garlicky scent and taste in each bite.

Smashed Avo + Chicken

Actually, this dish was my friend’s, who’s cheating a bit by adding chicken toppings. Despite I didn’t give it a try, she loved it to bits and was happy with her decision to go for this. The avocado was moist and naturally sweet. The additional happiness (read: chicken) balanced the taste well, being savory and tasty.

Aburi Salmon Roll

Both the names and the picture might look familiar as this Japanese sushi menu was indeed pretty common. Simply said, sometimes you came to a restaurant thinking you’re going to try something new and inventive, then you reached there opening the menu book and realized you fell for your all-time favorite ones then decided to still go for that thing. LOL you might laugh cause you just realized it happened, quite too many times!

OK since you might have known what would be featured in the dish, I wouldn’t go much with calling out the contents. Basically I would say Tetsuo’s version was as good as the other I’ve ever tried. The thickness of the rice layer was just right, allowing the sushi to carry generous amount of toppings. I did love the fresh salmon on top, which wasn’t only being the key attention due to its color-contrast, but also because of its rich taste.

Vegan Taco

Coming to my most favorite for the presentation! It’s like having rainbow in a plate! So much colors and I couldn’t handle the beauty. Not stopping at being good for the sight, the dish was also good for the body - featuring healthy ingredients including jackfruit, smashed avo, and cabbage. Just like the other taco, you would surely get Pico de Gallo and another avo to accompany the main dish. That green skin didn’t taste any veggie and I loved the soft texture. Every single element tasted so fresh and simply complemented each other. I even thought the only thing differentiated the jackfruit and any meat-based protein I usually had for taco, was just the texture. Taste wise, I got the same delicacy and my palate loved it to bits!

Grenadine Squash

As other drinks on the table were basically hot tea, I would just call out this non-mainstream one. Well, I honestly had to admit it’s not something so sophisticated since it’s just Grenadine syrup mixed with soda water. Nonetheless, I bet you could imagine how refreshing it was especially in the midst of the dry and humid Bali, giving a perfect closing to the awesome dining experience.

Tetsuo’s surely a pleasant choice to opt for, if you fancy the experience of having vegan food, but desire something with more twist. Furthermore it helps to solve your problem if you’re on a trip with mixed preferences where someone else wants more ‘sins’ (read: animal-based protein) in the meals, since they answer the demand of all :)

Sei Eat

Suiting the Indonesian taste buds very well, salted egg trend seemed to stay quite longer than its other friends getting into the hype at around the same time. Yes, this Singapore-originated dish was indeed delectable in the perception of most Indonesians. Well, at least I could see 9 of 10 people I met loved it to bits. Some even had special hunting session for this food every time they visited Singapore.

When the trend first came to Jakarta, most of them were only available for take-aways and delivery service. Just around beginning this year, most of the sellers started expanding and opening their own outlets for dine-in, including Saltedegg.Ind with its Sei Eat. It didn’t take that long indeed for the trend to spread to Serpong area. I used to wish I could have Salted Egg dishes not only when I was around Jakarta and just in a blink my wishes now came true. Even I could have quite various options with different cooking styles. Knowing Sei Eat was now here, close to home, it surely triggered my anxiety to have a try!

Sei Eat did start from a petite humble outlet with small dining area as most consumers ordered via online food-delivery app. Now the outlet had moved to much more sizable space located at the arrays of shophouses nearby Summarecon Mal Serpong. The design was simple yet quite unique with green plants at each corner and a wall covered by Instagenic cactuses. Not to forget, the iconic ‘OMG! I’m getting fat’ wall, which I bet would be the most favorite spot of all visitors for a picture. Just one thing kinda bothered me, there were few flies in the restaurant :(

Forgetting about the flies, let’s move on to the taste bud spoilers!

Chicken Sei (IDR 40k)

Visiting Sei, for sure the very first dish to try was the signature one. This was basically fried chicken fillet cooked in Sei special salted egg sauce. It was a lovely one as the chicken was tender, the portion was generous, and the salted egg sauce suited my palate well being neither overly creamy nor overly thick. It tasted yummy, being able to well mix sweet and savory flavors. Served with half-done sunny side up as well as hot and slightly mushy rice, it seemed just perfect! If you’re the ones in the boat with high curiosity, you could also give a try on their Singaporean salted or  Indonesian salted egg sauce. According to the waitress, first one was more into sweet while the latter was more into salty.

Ayam Sambal Matah (IDR 38k)

Despite the name carried the phrase ‘Salted Egg’, the dishes served weren’t limited to only anything cooked in salted egg sauce. Sei Eat did serve the tummies which weren’t that much into salted egg, such as this spicy signature Indonesian dish, Sambal Matah! As the picture might have told you, the taste was so hot so it might suit those who fancied spicy dishes very well. The chicken fillet featured here was also fried in crispy batter, but different style from earlier one as the coating came in crunchier texture. I personally preferred the texture of my first dish, but I did love their sambal matah, being flavorful and rich of spices! The moist scrambled egg impeccably balanced the spiciness of the chicken and thus made the overall bowl blended into one scrumptious dish.

Iced Milo Dino (IDR 25k)

At first I imagined having a giant glass of milo with milo powder on top, just like typical milo dino. However, it turned out that Sei Eat’s version was basically Milo drink without that ‘extra happiness’ on top. Well I didn’t mind as it did taste good (well, Milo never failed), but just thought it’s bit pricey coming with this basic combination.

Freezing Red Velvet (IDR 35k)

Going more anti-mainstream, my sister picked their Freezing Red Velvet, which was simply said Red Velvet Frappe. Their Red Velvet was Chocolate and did not contain ingredient like beetroot so you needn’t worry if you hated those beetroot-based one. It wasn’t something extraordinary, but surely not bad and was so refreshing especially in the midst of such hot and dry weather!

Delighted by the dishes, I guessed Sei would start entering my list of routine delivery order now, especially it’s close to home and office! For you who’re big fan of Salted Egg dishes, give it a try and complete your portfolio of brands!

Bali Bola, Another Hot Spot in the Paradise Island!

‘I have to go there!’, yeah my very first statement when passing by the place. It’s just too cute to be true and I just couldn’t handle it! Baby pink, blue, and yellow combined into awesome trio, coloring the Instagenic walls which served catchy quotes of their own. As always, Bali and its cafes never failed to WOW me.

Entering the venue, I was hitched even deeper with the interior. Same play of color, but this involved the dining sets and wall decorations. It seemed like reading a real-life teenager magazine. Furthermore, they paid do match attention to details, some of which we finally recognized, such as yellow glasses for the guys and pink for the girls. The dishes were also served in peculiarly-shaped plates, most of which I believed were made to order.

The menu wasn’t less unique than the design as they served anti-mainstream brunch dishes, which I thought rarely made elsewhere. Some might look similar to the common brunch menu, but they added their own touch to make them their own unique version. That triggered the curiosity to try more from the menu and did cause huge dilemma when I was about to make the choice. Another memorable point, they chose to call themselves as flexitarian, which I just figured out was basically a plant-based diet, with occasional allowance for meat/fish.

Cheesie Toastie (IDR 88k)

As the name told you, that’s what you got - simple toast with parmesan cheese on top and another cheese stuffed in between the layers. Presentation wise, hands down to the wonderful ideas utilizing the cheese as the ‘crown’ to the dish. Taste wise, I would say not bad besides the toast might be bit hard. However, I wouldn’t say there’s anything too special to call out.

Huevos Estrellados (IDR 66k)

Demanding more variation of flavors in the dish compared to the earlier one? Then this second menu served the ask. The Spanish dish served you runny sunny-side-up over fried potatoes with a sprinkle of faux bacon. Similar to it, some other versions were usually served with french fries but Bali Bola’s one was featuring seasoned potato slices. As extra carbo load, you would get sour dough on the side to accompany the main dish. My favorite was surely the bacon sprinkles on top which enriched the overall taste of the dish. I wish I could have more of them so I could still get my very last bite being as tasty as my premiere one.

Vegan Swiss Rosti (IDR 88k)

The winner to the most inventive dish among the ones listed on the order. It featured the perfectly crispy and non-greasy rosti as the base, topped with smashed avo and alfalfa sprouts. Yes, complete mix of textures as you could enjoy the combination of creamy and crunchy elements together. Surprisingly, this healthy savory dish did taste good with the rosti and avocado being flavorful.

Way beyond the dishes, I guessed people’s biggest incentive to visit the place would be the Instagenic snaps you could take here and yes, I did agree it’s not just looking good on the virtual world (read: photos), but the real one was indeed mesmerizing! Cut it short, if you by any chance about to visit Bali, it did worth listed on your itinerary ;)
