Gypsy Kitchen and Bar, Another Hipster Spot at Canggu

Located just 5 minutes from the beach in Canggu, Gypsy Kitchen and Bar's actually a part of the bed and breakfast, Vassani Stay. Yes, that's actually the first reason making this hipster cafe become one of the perfect choices to go for especially by the tourists visiting Canggu area. This 8-month-old cafe's just another one which looked 'sooo Aussie'. It's hard for me to explain what I meant, yet there's something in the design and set up that made me feel like I was visiting an Australian coffee shop. But just one thing, the long table separating the indoor and outdoor area, where the guests could sit while enjoying the road view, closely reminded me of The Nine Cafe at Bondi Beach, Sydney; exactly the alike-spot where I did take picture when I visited Sydney last September.

This exquisite place was started by two Canadians, Kevin Latrem and Robin Filteau-Bocher, who were a bar owner and a chef respectively. They decided to leave Canada and establish this Bohemian space at one of the most trending spots in Bali now, Canggu. Yeah, the place that's now packed not only with international tourists but also the local ones, not to mention the local people as well.

The venue's interior would certainly capture the heart of any visitors coming as it's so artistic. Hanging lamps, wooden tables with combination of colors, white walls, and large bar at the end of the corner; all of them just got my hunger towards Instagenic-view fully satisfied. Feeling curious and doing a bit information-hunting, I figured out that the owner Kevin Latrem's very consistent in maintaining the design of his restaurants as he's using LaChambreDesign for Gypsy, the one who's also doing his other 4 joints in Montreal.

Being a specialist in French and Portuguese kitchen, chef Robin has consistently held the strong belief in turning local products into the dishes that could amaze his guests, and the dishes he serves in Gypsy is also a part of this, serving Bali's local ingredients to develop the remarkable menus.

Reaching this place after having multiple rounds of heavy meals, my friends and I were actually already quite full. Nonetheless, the variants of dishes listed did steal my interest as they were somehow so me containing healthy yet succulent ingredients.

In the midst of our dilemma in deciding which one to opt for, we were quite lucky that we were served by a very kind and helpful waiter. He tried to come up with several options when we called out the criteria of dishes, which might suit our liking.

Robin's Brekkie (IDR 68k)

As recommended by the friendly waiter, Robin Brekkie's well-known as one of the most favorite in GYPSY. Yeah, I didn't have any single doubt when I firstly heard that since the dish even had the chef's name in it. Thus, it should be something special or could even be said as the signature dish of the cafe. When it's being served, all my friends and I stunned for a moment, looking at each other with widely opened eyes. We were all silent, but seemed like we could read each other's minds, which said that it smelled too good to be true that we might not hold any longer to have it go into our tummy. Like you might see, the huge plate was beautifully occupied by the colorful ingredients. 2 eggs any style - which we went for poached eggs, roasted baby potatoes, sauteed mushrooms, crispy bacon, toasts, fruits and granola.

Cutting the flawlessly cooked poached eggs, letting the egg yolk to burst out, mixing it with the other ingredients and putting all of them on top of the toast, you might get hypnotized with the wonderful combination of taste and texture; sweet and savory, moist and crunchy. Every single ingredient was so flavorful! Yet, the highlight of the dish was the granola. At first when ordering this dish, I didn't even have a single thought that it would contain granola as one of the components. Being a granola addict, my heart was dancing knowing that it's there! At first, my friends who were mostly disliked granola or at least didn't like it as much as I did, said that it's fine that I could finish all the granola. Nevertheless, having my very first spoon of it and getting hitched by the delicacy it delivered, I forced all my friends to have a try, at least just a spoon since I didn't want them to miss the indulgence as well. Guess what, we ended up compete to get more of it. I couldn't imagine having a full bowl of this granola. I might be able to take it as my breakfast, my lunch, and my dinner!

Avo on Toast (IDR 64k)

Another one which perhaps some people initially thought didn't suit their palate was this Avo on Toast; serving boiled eggs, smashed avo, nuts, candied orange, and cumin mayo, on top of sour dough. Sounded to healthy for you? Thought that you wouldn't want to have it? You'd better keep your opinion for yourself for now, before you had it on your taste bud. It was unexpectedly another surprise for my friends and I, brought healthy dish taste to the next level. Although I had to add a little more salt into the faultlessly smooth smashed avocado, I was deeply in love with this dish. Again, granola did play a part here as it made the whole combination of the ingredients went very well. I could have the salty taste from the eggs and the smashed avocado, balanced with the sweet one served by the granola. Saying it in one word, IRRESISTIBLE! If eating clean's always this scrumptious, I would be the first in the line to join the club.

Fruits on Fruits on Fruits (IDR 38k)

Regardless that it had been raining for several hours, the weather was quite hot and humid, making us craving for something refreshing. The choice then went to this blend of soursop, strawberry, orange, and honey. Though it was quite a heavy one with thick texture, I was pleased by the fact that I could taste it's freshly made of pure fruits without artificial flavors coming from syrup. Healthy yet palatable at the same time, what else could you ask for.

Besides that, their coffee's also must-have since they did specialize in it. Gladly said, I tried the complete set of their cappuccino, piccolo, and latte. No wonder why the barista was really proud of their coffee and kept recommending us to have a sip on it. Their cups of caffeine were indeed awesome, giving strong coffee aroma, bold flavor, slight acidity, and clean after-taste. If your palate fancied light coffee with dominant milk taste, you'd better go for the latte. However, if you're the one like me who preferred the stronger version, their piccolo was my most-recommended one. And actually, the size of their piccolo wasn't as small as the common one since the cup's more like typical latte in other places. Funnily, the latte here was served in cappuccino cup and they're available in big size, just like the one you saw in the picture.

Hot Cappuccino
Hot Piccolo
Hot Latte
Overall, Gypsy's absolutely a must-visit when you come to Bali, especially if you go around Canggu area. You will surely regret not trying their dishes and their coffee, and perhaps regret not taking the happening 'OOTD snaps' as well. Unquestionably, I will come back here for their Yoghurt Parfait, which I really wanted to try yet had to skip last time since my tummy wasn't able to accommodate anything anymore. See you (hopefully some time real soon), GYPSY!
